You can start on your clerkship written application before the recruitment dates open. 

While the period that clerkship applications are open for seem like a long time, it is difficult to dedicate time to this among your university assessments and work commitments.

Aspects like your cover letter and resume can be started on before the clerkship recruitment dates open. This would also give you more time to refine your written responses. 

The focus should be on large law firms. 

Reasoning is quite simple – larger law firms have more clerkship positions available, meaning there is more opportunity to progress through each stage. Where large law firms recruit upwards of 30 clerks, the number of clerks in smaller law firms are in the single digits.

Focus on larger law firms and apply to others if you have the time. The more applications, the better. 

Across law firms, there is no specified mark you would need to attain in order to be eligible for a clerkship. However, it goes without saying that a better law mark would give you a better chance at progressing to the interview stage. 

As a guideline, an average law mark of around 70% would give you a good chance at most law firms. 

Once you are through the written application stage, marks are insignificant when compared to your actual interview performance.

Your focus should not be on how long you spend but how your application addresses what recruiters are looking for. On average, clerks spend a day on each written application.
